7 Strains That hero 7 Strains You Can Smoke And Not Get The Munchies

There’s no doubt that cannabis can make food taste amazing. But, it’s possible that the herb might send you on one too many pizza binges than is healthy. Fortunately, not all cannabis strains cause the munchies. While it may come as a surprise, there are some strains out there that may actually help you eat less. The trick? Choose strains that are higher in two special cannabinoids, CBD and THCV, and lower in psychoactive THC. Here are seven strains that won’t give you the munchies.

1. Cannatonic (CBD)

Cannatonic is a hybrid strain that produces up to 20 percent cannabidiol (CBD) on average. While some phenotypes of this strain can produce tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the herb’s primary psychoactive and hunger-inducing molecule, this strain generally does not cause the high that has made cannabis famous.

Instead, a puff or two of Cannatonic is like inhaling a calm yet gently energizing cup of tea. Like most CBD strains, this bud is a great choice for daytime consumption.

2. Harlequin (CBD)

Harlequin is a unique sativa that can feature up to a 5:2 ratio of CBD to THC. Like Cannatonic, this strain does not cause the psychoactive high that more popular strains provide.

This strain would be an excellent choice for those seeking daytime pain management that won’t cause you to break your diet or keep heading to the break room for snacks.

3. Sour Tsunami (CBD)

This strain hails from the Humboldt area and was bred to be an effective pain management tool. Unlike the previous two strains, Sour Tsunami contains a fairly even ratio of THC to CBD. This means that consumers may still feel a slight psychoactive kick from the herb, but this strain is far from a heavy-hitter.

Rather, Sour Tsunami provides a happy, comfortable experience that is safe to use both day and night. Don’t expect to be too hungry, though. While this strain may still make the experience of consuming food more enjoyable, it’s unlikely to send you off into the kitchen.

4. Jack Herer (THC)

Here’s where things get a little more complicated. THC is the primary culprit behind the munchies. However, strains high in a related compound, tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) may make you a little less likely to develop the munchies.

Unfortunately, there are very few strains that are high in THCV. Often times, the compound barely makes up more than 0.1 percent of the total cannabinoids in a sample.

Often times, the compound barely makes up more than 0.1 percent of the total cannabinoids in a sample. Yet, some cannabis family lines are more likely to produce higher THCV than others. Members and crosses of the Jack Herer family are generally thought to produce more THCV than others.

If you’re hoping for a psychoactive kick that doesn’t make you quite as hungry, Jack Herer and related strains (Jack’s Cleaner, Jack the Ripper, Galactic Jack) might be a good choice. However, keep in mind that anything that contains high amounts of THC can make you hungry. With the psychoactive stuff, it can be more or less a toss up.

5. XJ-13 (THC)

XJ-13 is a rising star hybrid. Considered top-shelf, this cross between G-13 and Jack Herer. Perhaps due to it’s Herer lineage, this strain is thought to produce levels of THCV that are higher than average. More THCV means fewer munchies.

While this strain can also be quite psychoactive, XJ-13 has an anecdotal reputation for suppressing appetite rather than encouraging hunger. However, the overall effect on appetite from this strain will vary greatly from sample to sample, as well as from person to person.

6. Durban Poison (THC)

A landrace sativa from South Africa, Durban Poison is yet another strain that is thought to be both high in THC and high in THCV. Though, most dispensaries won’t list the amount of THCV a bud contains on their testing labels. Rather, this bud has a reputation for possibly providing some THCV and not causing raving cases of the munchies.

Instead, consumers will get a speedy and energizing, cerebral high that is excellent for daytime consumption. This strain is famous for its potency, so new consumers beware. You may experience some raciness or anxiety in high doses.

7. Doug’s Varin (THCV)

While strains high in THCV are certainly not common, they are out there. Over the next several years, there’s a good chance that high THCV buds will take center stage. Already, at least one pharmaceutical company has been experimenting with high-THCV strains and extracts.

A couple of breeders have also created plants with substantial THCV levels, but these plants are extremely rare and not readily available to the public. Doug’s Varin is one of them. If you’re searching for a psychoactive strain that does not cause the munchies, this is the one you should grab.

In tests from Steep Hill Labs, kief from Doug’s Varin has tested as high as 15 percent THCV, while THC hovered at about 19 percent. This strain also tested with a large amount of myrcene, a terpene which helps both of the compounds reach the brain much quicker.

With numbers like these, Doug’s Varin is an extremely potent medicinal strain that should be more available to the public.
